White Ribbons Launch Anti-Porn Campaign

By Lt. Colonel Carolyn Peacock –

The 1997 White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign will be held this year in conjunction with Pornography Awareness Week. Salvation Army units across the Western Territory will be participating in this campaign.

This year, however, we are asking for a louder and more significant image of The Salvation Army’s fight against pornography. Our goal is twofold: first, to have mass territorial participation during the national campaign to be held on Saturday, November 1, 1997. Second, to tie white ribbons on cars in the cities, towns and neighborhoods of Salvation Army communities, as well as give out flyers about the campaign. This will be similar to the red ribbons tied on car antennas for the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) campaign.

Imagine the witness The Salvation Army can make on such a significant issue. Imagine what a difference we can make as we stand against pornography.

Pornography is not merely nude pictures. It is the depiction of erotic behavior designed primarily to cause sexual excitement. The problem with pornography is that it disturbs the natural development of a person’s sexuality, hurting many lives in the process. It cheapens love between a man and a woman. It desensitizes one’s emotions so that explicit pornography is needed to find satisfaction, and it conditions readers to deviancy. It demeans and degrades women and children. In addition to all of these, pornography makes a mockery of a beautiful gift from God by reducing sexuality to a cheap animal commodity.

Christians avoid pornography because it destroys marriages and families; it contributes to child abuse, sexual abuse and spousal abuse. Ephesians 5:11 says, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Let’s work together to fulfill this portion of Scripture and to protect our loved ones from this addiction. One person can make a difference, but an Army of people can and will make a bigger and better difference.

Join me and your fellow Salvationists in prayer as we ask God to make this day a powerful witness for him. For more information about this campaign, please contact your local unit, or the current issues representative.
