The Salvation Army is on the ground in Elk City, Oklahoma, where a series of storms spawned eight tornadoes throughout the night on May 17.  One of them turned deadly—killing one and injuring several others. It also damaged or destroyed over 100 homes and businesses.
First responders quickly set about finding and rescuing people trapped in their homes after one of the tornadoes touched down. So far, 10 injuries and one fatality have been reported. Officials stated there were over 3,000 outages throughout the city.
Altus Oklahoma Command Officer Major Ben Walters is on scene with a canteen to provide food, hydration and emotional and spiritual care.  Major Walters is coordinating with Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) partners, the Elk City Fire Department and emergency managers to help meet the needs of the community.  The Salvation Army will continue to work closely with the Incident Command and partner agencies to provide appropriate assistance moving forward.
