Once again, history is repeating itself for the Office of Media Ministries. Twenty years ago when OMM Productions—the Salvation Army’s first video production unit—was established, the Army was faced with the difficulty of providing video programs to corps that hadn’t yet acquired the then state-of-the-art technology known as the videotape player.
Although it would be hard to find a corps today that has less than three videotape players, in a study of corps randomly selected across all four territories over 2/3 did not have a DVD player in their facility. Of those who did, some only had the drive on their office computer and others had to bring their personal DVD players from home for corps use.
With the current affordability of DVD players (some under $100) and the increase of good Christian resource material on DVD, including new programs from OMM, it is hard to understand why corps are not using the more versatile and convenient format. For those to whom it is a matter of product availability or knowing what to buy, OMM is offering low cost reliable DVD players at cost to the corps who want to catch up with the new technology.
In fact, OMM has been changing with the times as well and has gone on line with a new website to better meet the needs of development departments, city commanders and local corps. The website allows officers to get updates on the latest videos, review the catalogue and make inquiries about other resources. The site is also designed to be “dial up friendly” for corps who have trouble downloading sites with extensive graphics.
