MitandaHome02Home expansion project planned for Mitanda Home’s maintenance man.

Major Beryl Pierce, who oversees The Salvation Army Mitanda Home for the Aged in Zambia, has one project she’d especially like to finish before her term at the home ends this autumn.

Her goal is to raise $3,500 to extend the dwelling of the home’s maintenance man, Wilfred Ngobeka.

“He has been at Mitanda Home for nine years now,” Pierce said, “and is invaluable to us when it comes to our water and electrical systems.”

With his wife and four daughters, Ngobeka lives in a two-room cottage with no inside water supply. A curtain divides the main space into a living room and the parents’ bedroom. The girls sleep in a small room meant to be the kitchen.

The $3,500 would provide two bedrooms, a kitchen sink, and a hot water heater in the outside bathroom.

“I would really love to do this project before I complete my term here at Mitanda Home for the Aged on November 7,” Pierce said.

Donations may be made online at salvationarmy.org, designated for this project, or by mail with a check payable to The Salvation Army (with “for the work of Major Pierce in Zambia” noted on it) to The Salvation Army, Officer Services 12th floor, PO Box 22646, Long Beach, CA 90802-9998.
