A 21-year tradition of giving to The Salvation Army continues.
Continuing a Christmas tradition, a mystery donor has given a Krugerrand to the Fort Collins (Colorado) Salvation Army for the 21st year running.
The coin was donated Dec. 16 to a red kettle outside the Fort Collins Hobby Lobby store. Salvation Army staff were elated to find the coin and see the giving tradition continue.
“Our community continues to be blessed by this mystery donor year after year,” Fort Collins Corps Officer Lt. Lincoln Hawk said. “While the donor is still unknown, what is clear is the impact this person has on our Red Kettle Campaign. They exemplify the spirit of Christmas and allow us to continue providing services in Fort Collins.”
With only one week left in the annual Red Kettle Campaign, The Salvation Army in Colorado is significantly down in donations from this time last year. The Salvation Army still needs to raise $600,000 to reach its goal of $2.2 million before December 24.
“We need red kettle donations to help people all year long,” Intermountain Divisional Commander Major Mike Dickinson said. “Right now, we need donations to bring the miracle of Christmas to those who are hungry, those who have lost their jobs, those who hope to give their children at least one toy on Christmas morning. But when Christmas is over, those people still face hunger, job loss, discouragement and we desperately want to help them all year long.”
Donations made in Colorado stay in the state to help provide meals for families in need, Christmas toys for children and many other services throughout the year. If The Salvation Army’s goal is not met, the organization faces the potential of having to cut back on services to the community.
The Salvation Army is now asking for the community’s help in keeping those programs running so it can continue serving those less fortunate. If you see a red kettle, you can donate change, cash or checks. You can also donate with your smartphone at every kettle site using Kettle Pay.
