Hayward Adventure Corps Takes Off

The Adventure Corps at Hayward, Calif., has been a success story for the past two years, even following the promotion to Glory of the beloved corps officer, Lt. Drew Helms. Beginning with a “core group” of 10 boys on Tuesday nights, the number has grown to 30, with more coming all the time.

YPSM (now cadet) Christian M. Jung says, “Not only has the Lord blessed this group in size, but the spiritual fruit has also been wonderful.”

The boys are drawn to the Adventure Corps program by the unique blend of military-like discipline, outrageously fun outings and activities, and most importantly, the Bible teaching. The message of Jesus Christ is always the center of what those boys do.

When they were working on their family badge a few months ago, Jung asked them how many of them had come from divorced or broken homes. Ninety percent of the boys raised their hands. “If there were more Godly men who assumed their positions as husbands and fathers in this world,” says Jung, “maybe this would not be the case.

“I desire to see each and every one of those boys grow to be who the Lord Jesus Christ wants them to be. Proverbs 22:6 says, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.’ Thank God for The Salvation Army and all of its programs which affect his Kingdom every day.”
