Salvation Army relief workers are providing assistance to victims of Mexico’s recent 7.8 earthquake, which killed 25 and injured 300.

More than 250 homes were totally destroyed in the hard-hit cities of Colima, Villa de Alvarez, Coquimatlan, Tecoman, and the mountain village of Pueblo Juarez, and an additional 13,000 need immediate repair.

According to Major Eliseo Sanchez, Guadalajara, building materials–especially roofing–are needed to prevent additional families from becoming homeless. To date, 70 sets of laminate and six tons of concrete have been distributed to Villa de Alvaraz, and 55 sets of laminate have been distributed in Coquimatlan, Colima.

Territorial Commander Colonel Olin Hogan reports the Army will be spending approximately $20,000 on building supplies.

As part of a seven-person team, Major Mike Olsen, international emergency services consultant, Major Larry Repass, administrator, Mexico City ARP, and team leader Major Angel Vidaurri, Contreras corps officer, traveled throughout the area assessing the damage to the communities.
