Lt. Colonel Robert “Bob” Angel,
a faithful soldier of Christ, was peacefully promoted to Glory recently from the Manor Healthcare Long Term Facility in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Angel was born in 1913 in St. Louis, Mo. He met and fell in love with Gertrude Goul at a Salvation Army band concert at the Pasadena, Calif., Corps.

Bob and Gertrude entered training from the Wilmington, Calif., corps and were commissioned in 1935 as part of the Challenge Session. Following their commissioning he was sent to assist at Santa Barbara and she to Santa Ana Corps. Three years later they were married and began 43 years of active officership together.

Their responsibilities included l7 years as corps officers, USO work during the war years, and over 20 years in various administrative and specialty appointments. Four years were spent as territorial public relations officers, and three years heading up a successful $3 million capital campaign in Southern California. In 1970 Bob was appointed Northern California divisional commander with the rank of lt. colonel. Their last appointment was as leaders in the Intermountain Division.

Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Angel made their retirement home in Denver, Colo., and Angel became business manager for a Denver-based artist. In 1996, because of ill health, they moved to California to be closer to their daughter Judy.

A memorial service was held at the South San Francisco Citadel, with Major Ed Covert, Hayward corps officer, officiating.

Lt. Colonel Angel is survived by his wife of 61 years; daughter and son-in-law Jacelyn and Les Sainsbury, son and daughter-in-law Robert and June Angel, daughter and son-in-law Judy and Richard Richmond; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Among his sisters and brothers are Major Ken Angel (R) and Major Bunny Lane (R). Messages of sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Lt. Col.
