Commissioner Joe Noland describes his latest book as “a labor of love…a revolutionary flight plan that will take us to new heights morally, ethically, and spiritually.” That’s a big claim for a pocket-sized book, but Hope! A Flight Manual for Prospective Angels delivers both inspirational stories and practical challenges for “making hope happen” here on Earth.

Noland asserts that God wants to give his children “a two-fold blessing” referring to the verse in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (The Living Bible). With God’s help, we can claim this blessing in our own lives as we simultaneously “rise above the madding crowd and provide refuge to those who are hurting and crying out for help.”

But the Flight Manual also reminds us that the journey won’t always be easy or pretty. Poignant tales of high risk behaviors and daily suffering, “whether they are in South Africa or our own back yard” portray “a sense of urgency” to become involved and do something. “The world needs more angels…enough guardian angels to match every wanting child on the face of this darkening planet. Together we can make this a better world,” Noland urges. “Together we can make hope happen.”

Joe Noland, a retired Salvation Army commissioner, is now the founder and president of Hope Productions, and lives in La Quinta, California, with his wife, Doris.
