Capt.William Begonia, Maui Island coordinator, has gained such community awareness as to capture significant support from the county for programs for the homeless. Last year he was featured on the front page of the Sunday Maui News; and recently a TV crew filmed all activities of the corps while featuring the Begonia family as leaders in the Filipino community of the islands. Wonderful visibility for the Army!
SAFE DRIVERS
Captain Sam Southard, San Francisco ARC administrator, reports that three production assistants recently received recognition for outstanding performance, driving six months without an accident. Monogrammed jackets were presented to John Malgerie, Donald Slusher, Larry Robers, and John Ivy. This is part of the ongoing safety program at the ARC. Congratulations to all!
MERCY SEAT DEDICATED
The Honokaa Corps’ Waimea Outpost has achieved corps status in just one year. Led by Major Carol Ganot, it has seen growth in numbers, and increases in financial and volunteer support. Most recently a visitor, Jim Simms, a Salvationist from Toronto, built a beautiful mercy seat for the corps. After the ceremony, he was the first to kneel and rededicate his life to Christ.
BARR FATALLY INJURED
Janiece Barr, service extension committee chairperson in Tonopah, Nev., was promoted to Glory recently as a result of an accident while transporting young people from the Nevada Correctional Center. Besides being a tireless, “one lady Army,” in Tonopah, she ministered to everyone she met. With her husband Dennis, she co-pastored a small congregation that met in their home for worship. Dennis, though injured, continues their work.
BARRERA HONORED
Adrianna Barrera, of Escondido, Calif., as a high school junior became a leader and mentor at The Salvation Army After School Drop-in Center. She enjoys sharing with the children the values and skills she learned at the Army. For her efforts to make a difference in the community, Adrianna received the TV Channel 10 Leadership Award. Initially interested in politics, she is now considering applying for the College for Officer Training. Way to go!
DEL ORO FLOOD FOLLOWUP
“Operation Noah’s Ark,” a community restoration program, is under way in the Del Oro Division, reports Major Charles Strickland, divisional commander, following the recent disastrous floods. Mobile teams coordinate their work with local organizations to help with cleanup, immediate assistance, support groups, and plans for rebuilding.
In Marysville, the Army is an active member of a community-based group called DRI (Disaster Resources Interfaith). At the end of the flooding season they will bring in International Relief Teams out of San Diego to help rebuild for people not eligible for other help.
ART FROM THE AGED
Seniors from the Silvercrest Residence in North Seattle joined Seniors Making Art to unveil the mural they created for a local bus shelter. Renowned artist Dale Chihuli pioneered this unique and creative effort.
RELIEF IN BRAZIL
Thousands are homeless after floods devastated southern Brazil. In answer to a request for assistance, $5,000 has been sent from the Army’s Western Hemisphere Disaster Reserve. Plans are underway to airlift supplies in this emergency.
WEDDING AT ARP
Graduation day was also the Valentine’s Day wedding for Scott and Brenda Foster at the Grand Junction, Colo., Corps. They chose to be married at the ARP facility because of the change that has taken place in Scott’s life since he entered the program. Corps Officer Captain George Baker performed the ceremony. Congratulations on beginning a grand new life!
BACK TO BASICS
Delegates from all over the Sierra del Mar Division recently gathered for a Leadership Training Seminar. All 141 delegates profited from workshops led by Emily Seiler, Warren Johnson, and Carol Funk, M.S., a popular author and trainer on the subject of Applied Learning Styles. Hearty congratulations to Chairperson Shirley Green and DIVLOC, sponsor of the seminar.
